“‘The Three Ls of Empowerment’ is a speech delivered by Christine Lagarde at the National Democratic Institute, Washington DC, on 19 May 2014. The speech briefly analyses the sad plight of women in a male dominated world and suggests practical solutions. Women are denied equal opportunities in many countries. Women represent half the world’s population. But they contribute far less than 50 percent of world’s economic activities.
The only solution for this backward condition is through a three- pronged action plan for women namely, LEARNING, LABOUR and LEADERSHIP (3Ls).
Learning
Learning is the foundation of all social change. Learning or education helps women to help themselves and break the chains of discrimination. An African adage (wise saying) says: “ If you educate a boy, you train a man. If you educate a girl, you train a village.”
Labour
Labour or employment is necessary for women’s confidence-building and self-reliance. Today women are paid less than men. Globally women earn only three-quarters as men with equal education and work ambience. This is the reason for their low status and low-security. So, women should not only get employment but also equal pay for equal work. The authorities should provide loans to women so that they can build up self-employment and achieve economic independence.
Leadership
Leadership enables women to rise and fulfil their innate abilities and talents. Women leaders can make decisions based on consensus, inclusion and compassion. The only drawback is that women sometimes lack confidence. To overcome this deficiency they need to change their mindset. Women should come out from their comfort zones. If they dare the difference the difference will deliver. That means if they challenge the injustice and discrimination boldly, they will see a positive change in their lives.
